Makassar Is More Slovenly

The goverment of Makassar city turns out to encourage a program namely Makassar is not slovenly (adj/jorok) or locally well-known as Makassar Tidak Rantasa’. Many people have been familiar with the meaning of  “slovenly”, which means more and less, dirty. As the part of governor’s vision to keep Makassar clean, it will ensure (V/memastikan) the trash (n/sampah) to be transported from public dustbin (n/tempat sampah) to the city central disposal (n/tempat pembuangan sampah). It is thus expected to create a public awareness to cooporate with the distric goverment in cleaning maintenance of Makassar city. This paper will discuss the issue of Makassar is not slovenly.
As metropolitan people, many are not really concerned with environmental hygiene (n/kesehatan) and cleanliness, especially in our city, Makassar. The lack of public awareness and knowledge towards hygiene has inspired Makassar governor, Danny Pomanto, to initiate a program labeled Makassar Tidak Rantasa’ or Makassar is not slovenly. This is expected to have metropolitanians realize the urgency of hygiene as modern people’s behaviour. In addition, it expectedly becomes an inspiration for urbanized community being discipline responding to clean city effort. Apart from the intention to social change for being more clean, Makassar Tidak Rantasa’ is expected to be a stepping stone to grab back Adipura, an appreciation symbol of regional level cleanliness award in Indonesia.
In application, this program starts from distributing the number of garbages over the side of main roads in Makassar. The less number of garbage can is one of the major causes for environmental pollution and slovenly area, particularly in road vicinity. As the consequence, government then makes one of service following the Makassar Tidak Rantasa’, i.e. Bank Sampah (trash bank), making trash collected in certain number subtitutable (adj/dapat ditukar) with rice. This program intends to attract societies to collect garbage which will then be submitted to designated (v/ditunjuk,ditugaskan) governmental stands. After the submission, they will give rice as the reward.

Above all, Makasssar Tidak Rantasa’ seemingly is not more than a word. We can see that the implementation of the program is not running well, even makassar is more slovenly. Many taglines put in street billboard only gives dirty impression instead. Until now the banner is not well cared by the governor. Some billboard turned out to have broken and been recklessly (adv/serampangan, tidak diperhatikan) scattered (v/berserakan) around the street, nailed in trees, and other public facilities. How come Makassar is not filthy (adj/kotor, dekil)! The society will not be interested by only giving a tagline without controlling. Instead of making them awared, the society is prepared more not to care about the tagline which spread around the city. They also feel that the banner is just only for electoral campaign purpose. So, we need someone who can control and make evaluation toward the governor program.
Furthermore, the main cause of dirty derives from the town alley (n/lorong). Life style of filthy mostly commences (v/mulai) from the alley in this city. Therefore, for making city clean, the governor have to give more attention to the society who live in vicinity (n/sekitaran) of the alley. Beside that, the governor have to appoint someone who is competence and reliable (adj/dapat dipercaya) to be responsible on overseeing (v/mengontrol) that program, instead of merely (adj/hanya selalu, melulu) providing a dustbin in everywhere without control.

To conclude, narrow space in heterogen community has caused all the problems, one of them is the slovenliness. So, after seing this condition, concerning on the town alley will be more effective to reduce the number of slovenliness rather than putting banner in city’s billboard or, the worse, in every city’s spot and it also will make makassar clean or not slovenly, or tidak rantasa’.

December Rain, Flood Hits Makassar

I think this is a very common, old, and repetitive topic to discuss but at least this can be a strong warning for us. As we know that Indonesia is currently in a rainy season and some provinces including Aceh, East Java, and West Java, and of course, South Sulawesi are inundated (v=banjir) due to very high intensity rainfalls. One of the regions that has been prevalent (adj=lazim) with flood is Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. Residents of Makassar are soon threatened again with flooding in November, December, and early 2013 when the rainy season arrives. Ups, it’s happening. Just now, rain hit Makassar again and submerged (v= several settlement (n=pemukiman) areas and roads. Floods were actually triggered (v=dipicu) by incessant (adj=terus menerus) rains over the past few days.

Some housing areas were affected by this heavy rainfall i.e Panakukang Toddopuli, Dewi, and Bumi Tamalanrea. Roads which were submerged included Nusantara, Bandang, and Monginsidi streets. Hasanuddin University and its surrounding also had their spare of flood. Dept. of Public Works (Dinas PU) Makassar informed some areas which prone to (ajd=rawan) flooding in south and east part of the city i.e Jl Malengkeri III, Jl Andi Tonro, Jl Rappo-rappo, Jl Bontomene, Jl Pelita Raya, Kompleks IKIP, Jl Racing Center, Jl Perintis Kemerdekaan, and Jl Antang.

Actually the main reason why Makassar has been always a good company (n=teman) with flood is because the drainage condition is no longer able to accommodate the rainfall and quite heavy water discharge (n=debit air). Often, drainage is found in poor condition and filled by sediment (n=endapan) so that it shallows. Furthermore, the drainage system is often blocked out by garbage which obstructs (v=menghalangi) the flood water to subside (v=surut). With this condition, it’ll be very difficult for Makassar to get rid of (v=menyingkirkan) this flood problem which often haunts the residents.

Flood doesn’t only induce (v=menyebabkan) submergence of areas but also raises health disorders. We would expect many diseases during this rainy season. Children and old folks would feel sick easily. Proper sanitary system and access to affected – areas are eminently (adv=sangat) needed.

Regarding to this issue, Makassar government has only been successfully rehabilitating 59 point of hundreds drainage this year, lie in 14 districts. This is due to the very limited funds. Anyway, flood problem shouldn’t be only government’s concern. We, as residents, are also expected to assist the city government, well at least cleaning our gutters (n=selokan).

However, in fact, it is truly tough to encourage the residents to have environmental awareness. Even though we often ask them to clean our surroundings, they tend to ignore and deny us bad. When the flood comes, they then go, in droves (adv=berbondong-bondong), find some tools to clean the garbage blocking out the gutters. Why don’t they just do that before the flood comes? Anyway, just do whatever you can do to conserve our environment. You’ll never know that the little things you do may have a huge impact to our salvation.

Traffic Jam In Makassar

Traffic congestion is a condition on road networks that occurs as use increases, and is characterized by slower speeds, longer trip times, and increased vehicular queueing (antri). The most common example is the physical use of roads by vehicles. When traffic demand is great enough that the interaction between vehicles slows the speed of the traffic stream, congestion is incurred. As demand approaches the capacity of a road (or of the intersections along the road), extreme traffic congestion sets in.

Traffic congestion occurs when a volume of traffic or modal split generates demand for space greater than the available road capacity, this point is commonly termed saturation. There are a number of specific circumstances (keadaan) which cause or aggravate (menjengkelkan, memperburuk) congestion; most of them reduce the capacity of a road at a given point or over a certain length, or increase the number of vehicles required for a given volume of people or goods.

Talking about traffic jam makes my face look upset. Why? Because I hate being trapped in traffic jam, and so does everyone. My friends and I always come late to get campus just because of traffic jam. Sometimes traffic jam becomes so heavy that I cannot get my campus punctually even though I have already scheduled my daily activities well. I need more or less twenty minutes to get my campus, so I always go to my campus thirty minutes before the exact time which the class starts. I am considering moving to a boarding house close to my campus. I want to spend more time doing the thing I really enjoy doing in my free time instead of being trapped in traffic jam. Nevertheless, I don’t want to give up my present boarding house. I wish the government would solve traffic jam issue immediately.

As my experiences being trapped in traffic jam, there are many causes of traffic jam in Makassar, the city where I am living now. They are public vehicles (called ‘pete-pete’) that exceed the limits and are careless, ‘bemo or becak’ that moves too slowly, broken roads, demonstration of students, an accident, vehicles that are parked in the side of the roads, flood, and police who are checking the driving license.

Among them the most problem making traffic jam is public vehicles or ‘pete-pete.’ The number of ‘pete-pete’ in Makassar already exceeds the demand. I always become upset when they, the drivers of ‘pete-pete,’ move suddenly to the side of the road to pick passenger up. I, who is behind them, am surprised and have to stop on the brakes suddenly too. It’s of course very dangerous; I may hit them. If I had power or authority, I would convert ‘pete-pete’ into buses like in Surabaya. Additionally, I would forbid trucks, which make traffic jam, to use the main roads at the busy time.

The Problems of traffic jam at metropolis city is more complex. also it happened at Makassar city. The Problems caused the long time in make a trip from origin to destination, have consequences more vehicle operating expenses magnitude with more voice pollution height and air pollution. One of the factor that influence traffic jam at makassar city is intersection quantity, both for traffic light also intersection doesn't use traffic light. and another factor is the quantity of road that used to do to set back direction (u turn), so that retard traffic current smoothness. This study aims to detect the length of time of the vehicle U-turn caused the traffic volume.
